When Joseph Martin Koenig was born on February 29, 1872, in Farrar, Missouri, his father, Herman, was 35 and his mother, Maria, was 29. He married Martha Maria Detjen on November 8, 1900, in his hometown. Martha Maria Detjen was born on October 4, 1879, in Farrar, Missouri.

They had two children during their marriage. She died on May 31, 1960, in Farrar, Missouri, at the age of 80.  He died on August 18, 1965, in Farrar, Missouri, at the age of 93, and was buried there.
